In this post, I will show you how you can solve the problem of the slow internet in Windows 10 in simple steps.

Windows 10 is Microsoft's greatest and latest OS. There are many new advanced and interesting features added to it. But these features creates some nasty little problems of the slow internet in windows 10.

You might face such problems when you upgrade from your older OS, change drivers or even just Windows components themselves grabbing some of your bandwidths.

But fret not. Here are some simple steps that you can do to solve such problems, all within Windows.

My experience with slow internet in Windows 10-

Not long ago, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. This decision was made after I upgraded my PC. I thought if I am upgrading my PC then why not the OS. Well, guess how all this went?

Not good!

First, there were some audio driver issues. The system wouldn't accept the drivers. When this problem was solved, the major problem started. I was not getting even the 10% of my internet speeds. Sites won't open, random slow downs and speed ups. All this drove me crazy.

Reinstalled drivers, Reinstalled Windows itself 2-3 times, enable/disable LAN from BIOS. Every step that I could try. Until I found some more tricks.

Command Prompt to the Rescue

Instead of giving you details of various CMD commands and bore you, I will just tell you what will work.

Press CMD in the search bar of the start menu.

Right-click on it and select "Run As Administrator"



When the CMD window shows up, the first type in "ipconfig /renew" (without the commas) to bring your windows internet settings to their default values.



When it is done, enter the following command- netsh interface tcp show global



If you see the Auto-tuning Level - normal, then you will have to change it to disabled. Now enter the following command- netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

With this command properly executed, I solved the problem instantly. And not just Windows 10, this command also helps in solving slow internet problems in Windows 7.

Change Windows Bandwidth Reservation

Windows 10, 8.1 and even 7 reserved 20% of the internet bandwidth for its own use. That is like 200Kbps reserved from every 1Mbps.

But you can disable it.

Go to search bar of the start menu. Type in gpedit.msc and run it as an administrator.



On the left side, click on "Administrative Templates". Then select "Network". Look for the "QoS Packet Scheduler" option.



Select the option "Limit Reservable Bandwidth". Here, first select Enabled and type in 0% in the left box. Press OK.



This will limit the reserved bandwidth available for Windows.

Some Other Checks-

The tips I gave above will work if you are mainly facing the issue only with your PC. That is if your other devices on the same network are working fine but only a single machine is causing problems.

Like in my case, my other devices like my phones were working fine. It was only my desktop that was serving me problems.

But what if your other devices show such problems too?

In that case, your router/modem or your ISP is to blame.

Check your cables- A broken or a heavily kinked cable can cause slowdowns too. I have experienced it more than once when one of my Ethernet cables was stuck between a door. So see if that is not happening with your cables too.

Restart your router/modem- we humans have become busy. Sometimes it is easy to assume that Internet and WiFi work on magic. But that's not how devices work. Sometimes just a simple restart of your router or modem, just for 10 minutes, can work wonders. Try it too!

Contact your ISP- You know what to do! Pick up your phone and let them have a piece of your frustration..
