We have the Corsair Scimitar RGB for review today. An MOBA/MMO dedicated mouse with some interesting features on offer, let's see if the Corsair Scimitar RGB performs just as good as it looks.

Corsair touts Corsair Scimitar RGB as the perfect MOBA/MMO mouse. With a 12000DPI optical sensor, 12 mechanical side buttons, software customization and 4-zone RGB lighting, it looks like an interesting and do-it-all mouse.

MOBA/MMO mouse have always been a hit and miss with most companies. The idea of having tens of buttons slapped onto the side of a plastic shell is hard to pull off. Razer NAGA and Logitech G600 were some of the better examples.

Corsair tried their luck in this segment with the M95. It didn't taste the same success as that of the Razer and Logitech models. But with the Corsair Scimitar, all these changed. Here are the complete specs-



Let's kick start the review with the design.

Closer Look - Design

Corsair Scimitar RGB is an interesting looking rodent. We got the Black-Yellow variant and it looks like a mutant in an X-Men costume. It is also available in black. Because of the bright yellow color, there is no chance that you will mistake it for any other mouse. There is obvious conventional MMO design with a taller left side with a wide tapering right.

Top

The top surface is contoured for a deep seating palm grip. There is a textured right rubber panel for the ring and pinky finger. Thumb rests on the 12 side buttons but there is no base support for it. More on the ergonomics in just a minute.

The surface material is a soft-touch plastic. It is not rubbery, it was smoother than I hoped for. The rubber texture on the right side is fine, though.



The top of the body houses the RGB logo and the two DPI buttons along with the smooth scrolling, RGB LED-lit scroll wheel. It has distinct steps and virtually silent. But it is harder to press. It is not as light as some other mouse.



DPI buttons are placed far too behind to press them quickly in between a heated session. You will have to readjust your grip to press them. The buttons have a satisfactory click to them.

Contrary to the middle click, the primary left and right click buttons are quiet and light. The actuation force on the switches is perfect.

Front

At the front of the mouse, there is an off-centered strain relief for the cable and also houses three slit design with LED lighting.



Base

At the bottom, you will find "extra large" PTFE feet, as Corsair calls them. They are not extra large but decent for the size of the mouse. They are smooth and easy to slide. You can also see the opening for the 12000DPI optical sensor. It is placed at the dead center, which is always a good thing. You also have a small lock for the key-slider. You loosen-tighten it with the included tool.



Left Side Buttons

On the left side, there is the main USP of the mouse- the 12 mechanical buttons with RGB lighting, and the big LED-lit DPI indicator. The 12 buttons take up the whole left side. Corsair Scimitar uses a "Key-Slider" system that allows you to position the buttons in an 8mm range. You can loosen a screw at the bottom, move the plate to the desired location and lock it down.



The buttons are mechanical, so long life is expected but the initial touch is mushy. They actuate with a good audible click but the free play in the buttons give a sub-par feeling. The buttons are clearly indicated with numbers and the light coming off them is clean.

Alternate button columns are textured and they are big enough for the thumb. I wished the buttons had more to differentiate them. The texture on the buttons is not that prominent. You get used to it but it could have been improved. I will take 9 well-placed, well-designed buttons any day over 12 okay ones.

Cable

The cable is 1.8m long. It is smooth, flexible and sleeved with braided nylon sleeving. Because of the nylon sleeve, there are chances of some fraying in the long run if used in a very rough location.



You also get a velcro strap that helps in storing the excess cable. The strain relief on the cable is the standard Corsair yellow-thingy. It's of nice quality, enough said.
